After premiering with audiences in Toronto and Cannes, these three films will be screened on the big screen in Sofia in March.
Presented in Cannes, Shanghai, Karlovy Vary, and Palm Springs, the new film Nasty by Tudor Giurgiu, co-authored with Cristian Pascariu and Tudor Popescu, focuses on one of the most renowned court masters of the recent past – the legendary Romanian Ilie Nastase. The documentary look at the life of this exceptional tennis player, who was the first world No. 1 in the ATP rankings (holding that position for 40 weeks from the inception of the ranking in the summer of 1973), is an inspiring mosaic of visual evidence of his playing talent and the memories of those who were closest to him over the years. Nasty is a court sensation, thanks to his virtuoso style and inventive approach to the game, but he is also known for his intolerance of restrictions, his rebellious nature, and his reputation as a total “bad boy.” His game has been described as a “true spectacle,” and sports experts note that following his emergence as a tennis star, Nastase attracted a completely new audience to the sport and left a remarkable legacy.
Do not miss the Romanian film Nasty, which will be presented in person by director Tudor Giurgiu!
The choice of Rúnar Rúnarsson’s When The Light Breaks to open the Cannes competition program “Un Certain Regard” is by no means accidental – it is his fourth feature film in 13 years. After his debut in the “Directors' Fortnight” and world premieres in Toronto and Locarno of his subsequent works, the Icelandic director once again draws attention with his skillful, delicate portrayal of the unforeseen confrontation with death experienced by a group of young people who are forced to accept the inevitable and live with sorrow and love. The transformation unfolds within a single day, when a catastrophe abruptly ends a young man’s life, and two girls who are in love with him must find a way toward the future. Thanks to Rúnarsson’s impressive visual language and the powerful performances of the young talents, the film has an exceptionally strong emotional impact and has won the admiration of audiences at many festivals worldwide.
The latest film by Gia Coppola – The Last Showgirl – premiered at the Toronto festival and has received numerous nominations from various forums, including the special jury award at San Sebastián, where the film was nominated for the “Golden Shell,” as well as two nominations for the prestigious Golden Globes – for Best Original Song and for an actress’s performance in the Drama category. Film critics are unanimous: with her role in The Last Showgirl, the legendary Pamela Anderson is making her grand return to cinema. This touching story is dedicated to human perseverance, and Anderson is remarkable in her portrayal of Shelley – a dazzling variety actress who must decide which path to take after her show unexpectedly ends following a 30-year career on the Las Vegas stage. Gia Coppola, granddaughter of the legendary Francis Ford Coppola, has experience in both cinema and short film projects; her feature debut from 2013, Palo Alto – an adaptation of James Franco’s debut short story collection featuring his participation – premiered in the “Horizons” program at the Venice Film Festival.
